Overview

Ngong hills forest is located in the northern tip of Kajiado County and it’s about 25Km from Nairobi city. The forest covers an area of 3077.6 ha. It is managed by Kenya Forest Service (KFS).

The word “Ngong” is a Maasai word meaning “knuckles” due to the 4 hill peaks of the ridge, which stands alone rising from the plain around Nairobi.

Flora – The vegetation of Ngong hills forest includes exotic and indigenous tress for example pine, cypress(Exotic)sandal wood, Acacia, croton (Indigenous) mainly determined by altitude, soils type and human utilization of the land.

Fauna – The forest is known to host a variety of animals which includes: buffaloes, wild pigs, porcupine, and dik-diks.These animals are residents of the forest and their movement is usually determined by factors such as drought, water availability and forage availability.

Itinerary

Day 1

0630 hrs, depart from a central point in Nairobi.

0800 hrs, Hiking starts from the base of Ngong Hills.
We shall enjoy hiking all the peaks that form a series along the mountain and our guides will help you learn about the history of the place.

This majestic mountain range spans the western end of Nairobi. It is famous in many historical works, including Karen Blixen’s film “Out of Africa”. Her lover Denys Finch Hatton was buried along the hills and the story was that Karen could see the grave site from her house. The peak of the Ngong Hills lies at 2,460 m (8070 feet) above sea level.. This exciting hiking tour will help you unlock this and much more fascinating features of the legendary Ngong Hills.

The hike takes about 4 to 5 hour to complete, depending on fitness levels of participants. The first kilometer from Ngong Police Station is a gradual ascent through human settlements until you get to a barrier indicating the start of the Ngong Hills forest reserve. From here on, you go past a wind farm, before climbing the first steep hill leading to an area populated with Radio station masts.

Optional activities – Archery (Ksh 1,000), Zip Lining (Ksh1,000), Paint Balling ( Ksh 1,500) Biking ( Ksh 500).

Continue with the hike.

The trail thins out and descends into a trough before emerging on to the next steep hill. Just when you think the worst is over, the rolling hills seem to keep popping up, with each taking its toll on you. Thankfully, the views all round are magnificent, making the effort worthwhile. On a lucky day, you are likely to encounter buffalo around the fourth hill, on account of the abundant bushes at these higher altitudes on the range. To your right is a fantastic view of the Great Rift Valley, while on the far left is a view of the City of Nairobi

1330 hrs – Picnic lunch at Kona Baridi.

1430 hrs, depart for the City.

1600 hrs, estimated arrival time in Nairobi.
